Fly VFR with a chart that's always under you.

PilotCharts overlays your live GPS position on real aeronautical charts from openAIP — cached to your device automatically, so it keeps working with no signal. Search any airport, check runways and frequencies, and open the official chart PDF in two taps.

Free for map browsing, search, and airport info. No account required.

Everything you need to find your way

The core moving map is free for every pilot — no trial, no account, no catch.

Live moving map

Your position, rendered as a rotating aircraft on top of a real VFR aeronautical chart — OpenStreetMap base plus openAIP's chart overlay.

Works with no signal

Map tiles cache to disk automatically as you fly. Pan over an area once online, and it keeps working offline — no manual downloads for the map itself.

Airport details from openAIP

Elevation, runways, frequencies, PPR, contact info, and hours of operation — straight from openAIP, for airports worldwide.

Official charts, one tap away

Jump straight to an aerodrome's official chart PDF from the national AIP, opened in your browser — never redistributed in-app.

Instant search

Find any airport by ICAO code or name, with live results as you type — then jump straight to it on the chart.

Download what you need

Pull airports, reporting points, navaids, airspace and obstacles for any country, worldwide — free, by country, forever.

The same chart, more room to read it

PilotCharts adapts to iPad in both orientations — great for a kneeboard mount or on the panel.

Built for real flying and cockpit workflows

A subscription on top of the free map, for glass & analog instruments, live weather, route planning, simulator connectivity, and deep personalization.

Glass PFD, classic analog gauges, or hybrid

Transform your tablet or phone into a primary flight display. Switch effortlessly between a modern Glass PFD (speed & altitude tapes, artificial horizon, VSI, and 360° rotating compass rose), classic "Basic T" Six-Pack round steam gauges (ASI, attitude, altimeter, turn coordinator, DG, VSI), or a wide Hybrid cluster tailored to your preference.

  • Modern PFD with tapes, artificial horizon, and next-waypoint bug
  • Classic Six-Pack analog steam gauges with colored airspeed arcs
  • Hybrid layout combining round dials with glass tapes and horizon
  • 360° rotating Compass Rose with GA aircraft symbol and active route tracking
  • Compact telemetry strip or enlarged instrument cluster with size scaling

Multi-waypoint VFR routes & Sim streaming

Plan VFR cross-country flights directly on the chart. Tap waypoints, snap to visual reporting points, view magnetic track headings and nautical mile leg distances, and replay your route with banked turns. Connect directly to X-Plane or MSFS via ForeFlight UDP protocol for real-time desktop simulator practice on your device.

  • Multi-waypoint route creation with snap-to-reporting-points
  • Leg magnetic headings, nautical miles, and active waypoint guidance
  • Comprehensive briefing PDF generation with appended official airport charts
  • Native UDP connectivity with X-Plane & MSFS (ForeFlight protocol)
  • Integrated floating flight stopwatch with customizable corner positions

Weather, decoded — not just a raw string

METAR and TAF straight from NOAA's Aviation Weather Center, with flight-category badges, decoded wind/visibility/cloud/altimeter, and multi-day TAF forecasts — plus live rain radar, wind, cloud, and pressure overlays on the chart itself.

  • Flight category at a glance — VFR, MVFR, IFR, LIFR
  • Decoded and raw METAR / TAF with NOTAMs tab
  • Rain radar, wind, clouds & pressure weather overlays
  • Favorite airports quick-access bar and pinned split-screen panels

A chart that matches how you fly

Recolor every airspace class, adjust border thickness and fill opacity, and tune label density by zoom level — plus custom document attachments (PDFs/images) and notes for every airfield.

  • Full airspace color and fill opacity customization
  • Multiple base map styles (OpenFreeMap vector, Satellite, OpenStreetMap)
  • Per-airport pilot notes with proximity alerts and custom PDF attachments
  • Configurable map controls, heading-up mode, and follow zoom

Questions pilots ask

Is PilotCharts free?
Yes. Map browsing, search, and airport details sourced from openAIP are free for everyone, with no trial period or account required. A Pro subscription — covering flight instruments (PFD, analog six-pack, hybrid), route planning, simulator connectivity, live weather, and chart personalization — is launching alongside the first public release.
Can I use this for navigation?
No. PilotCharts is a situational-awareness and planning aid — a moving map over aeronautical and OpenStreetMap data. It is not a certified EFB and must not replace official charts, NOTAMs, or your aircraft's primary means of navigation.
Does it work without an internet connection?
The base map and VFR chart tiles cache to your device automatically as you view them, so areas you've already flown over keep working offline. Airport, navaid, airspace and obstacle data can be downloaded ahead of time, per country, from the app's Data page — so a flight you've prepared for stays fully available with no signal at all.
Where does the data come from?
Aeronautical data (airports, airspace, navaids, obstacles, VFR charts) comes from openAIP. The base map is OpenStreetMap, rendered with MapLibre. Weather is NOAA's public-domain Aviation Weather Center. Official chart PDFs link out to each country's own aviation authority — PilotCharts never redistributes them.
Which platforms does it support?
iOS and Android. PilotCharts is a native mobile app — there's no web or desktop version.
When does it launch?
PilotCharts is in active development. Join the waitlist and we'll let you know as soon as it's available.
